Lilly’s work with athletes is focused on supporting the full person behind the performance. At Lilly Wehman Counseling, this space is designed to help athletes navigate the mental and emotional demands of sport while also strengthening their sense of identity outside of it while building confidence, sharpening mental skills, and improving performance in a way that feels grounded, sustainable, and true to who they are.

We offer online therapy sessions for athletes throughout Illinois. Each 55-minute session is a space to slow down and talk through what you’re experiencing—both in sport and in life outside of it. Together, we explore what’s feeling heavy, challenging, or stuck, while also making room for reflection, clarity, and self-understanding—while building tangible mental performance skills like mindfulness, meditation, visualization, mantra development, positive self-talk, and intentional goal setting that you can carry with you on the field and beyond.

I am considered an out-of-network provider, which means you would pay for sessions directly, and I will provide a “Superbill” that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement based on your out-of-network benefits. Coverage varies by plan, so I encourage you to check in with your insurance provider to understand what your specific plan may cover.

Athlete Wellness & Performance

Middle School, High School, College, Professional & Retired Athletes

What athlete-focused therapy can help with:

  • Performance Anxiety (pre-game nerves, fear of messing up, overthinking during competition)

  • Confidence & Self-doubt (confidence slumps, inconsistency in performance, trusting your training)

  • Perfectionism & Pressure (high expectations, fear of failure, harsh self-criticism)

  • Burnout & Exhaustion (overtraining, emotional fatigue, loss of enjoyment in sport)

  • Injury Recovery (return-to-play anxiety, identity shifts during time away from sport)

  • Mental Performance Skills (focus, routines, visualization, self-talk, mantras, goal-setting)

  • Identity & Self-worth (feeling defined by sport, difficulty separating self from performance)

  • Transitions & Change (graduation, role changes on a team, retirement from sport)

  • Motivation (loss of drive, feeling stuck, reconnecting with purpose)

  • Comparison & Team Dynamics (comparison to others, jealousy, communication challenges)

  • Coach & Performance Relationships (conflict, pressure, approval-seeking, feedback sensitivity)

  • Mental Blocks & Performance (fear of mistakes, “choking,” bouncing back after errors)

  • Balance & Life Stress (managing academics, relationships, and sport demands)

  • Emotional Regulation (staying grounded under pressure, recovering after intense moments)

Team Mental Health & Performance Workshops

Lilly Wehman Counseling offers mental health and performance workshops designed for middle school, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. Workshops can focus on foundational mindset skills that support both performance and well-being, or be tailored to address the unique needs and goals of a specific team.

Common topics include confidence, resilience, leadership, communication, managing pressure, mental recovery, team culture, recruiting preparation, injury recovery, and balancing athletics with life outside of sport.

Workshop series can range in length depending on the team's goals. While single-session presentations are available, I typically recommend beginning with a 4–6 session series. This allows time to build rapport and trust with athletes, establish a strong foundation, and create opportunities for meaningful skill development and lasting impact.

Each program is customized to meet the needs of the team, coaching staff, and organization.

The Person Behind the Performance

All work at Lilly Wehman Counseling is rooted in the belief that life and sport are deeply connected—what happens in one often shows up in the other. Because of that, therapy creates space to explore both performance and personal experience.

The goal is to support growth in both directions: helping athletes feel more grounded, self-aware, and steady in sport while also enhancing performance through stronger confidence, focus, and mental skills all while feeling more connected, balanced, and at ease in life outside of it.
